The Ford Contour, produced from 1995 to 2000, was a compact or midsize sedan designed to replace the Ford Tempo in the US market. Its European styling and design distinguish it in the compact car segment. In the 1990s, the Contour shared a platform with the Mondeo as part of Ford's global "world car" strategy, which emphasized a mix of ride comfort and handling qualities. Key design elements included a sleek, aerodynamic shape and rounded body lines, a compact side with a midsize feel, and a four-door layout. The Contour had numerous engine options, including the base 2.0L inline-4 Zetec and the optional 2.5L Duratec V6. Both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions were offered, with the manual transmission being preferred because of its responsiveness.
The Contour was available in several trim levels, including GL, LX, SE, and the high-performance Contour SVT, which was tuned by Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) in 1998. The Contour was recognized for its European-influenced driving dynamics, which provided snappy handling and good fuel economy, especially in the V6 variants. The interior was built with European sensibilities, focusing on functionality and simplicity. Standard safety features included dual front airbags and optional anti-lock brakes (ABS). Despite its solid driving dynamics and European-inspired design, the Contour struggled to achieve widespread success in the US market and was discontinued in 2000.
